How Ayurveda Can Help You Overcome Those Sleepless Nights

Have you ever just lied in bed, thinking you were ready to fall asleep on the spot, but end up wide awake staring at the ceiling? Or went to bed at 10 p.m. but didn’t manage to actually fall asleep until 3 a.m.? Us (and 30-45% of the adult population worldwide) too!

The worst part is that you don’t voluntarily do that; it just happens. It’s like your own brain doesn’t want you to fall asleep. And out of frustration, you start searching everywhere for a solution that will help you get a good night’s sleep. It works out sometimes, but other times, its effects only last for about a week. But, do not despair, we may have found the perfect solution: Ayurveda.

What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. In fact, it was developed over 3,000 years ago in India. It’s based on the belief that we are all made up of a unique combination of 3 doshas (elements) that should always be in balance:
1. Pitta: the heat of fire.
2. Vata: the motion of wind and air.
3. Kapha: the solidity of earth and water.

Whenever one of these elements goes out of balance, it directly affects our health. From skin rashes (that are caused by a Pitta imbalance) to anxiety (that is caused by a Vata imbalance), all our health problems can be directly linked to an imbalance in our doshas.

Ayurveda & Sleep Problems
According to Ayurveda, Vata imbalance causes our sleep problems. While it represents our flow and motion, many day-to-day problems, such as stress and anxiety, can cause our Vata to go out of balance, resulting in sleep problems. And this is exactly our case!
Luckily, there are easy solutions that Ayurveda can offer us in order to balance ourselves out and get a good night’s sleep. Finally!

Ghee: The Butter That Kisses Us Good Night
If you’re wondering what ghee is, it’s a type of clarified butter that originated in ancient India. It's made from cow or buffalo milk and is clarified by boiling.

Experts in Ayurveda use ghee for its rewarding properties that help sleepless people get more sleep.

There are two ways you can use ghee to improve your sleep routine.

Cardamom Ghee
This sleep tonic always helps us relax and get a good night’s sleep – and we can feel its soothing effects sink in pretty quickly! It’s super easy to make, especially after a long day when you’re simply craving a deep and relaxing sleep.

Here’s how you can make it.

Ingredients:
- 1 cup almond milk (or any milk you prefer)
- 2 tsp ghee
- 1 pinch cardamom
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 1 tsp honey (or to taste)

Instructions:
- Warm the cup of almond milk
- Blend it with the ghee, cardamom, nutmeg, and honey until frothy
- Drink 30 minutes before hitting the sack

Ghee Foot Massage
If that sounded to you as relaxing as it did to us, we’ve got to tell you: this massage is divine!

All you need to do is gently massage the soles of your feet with 1 tbsp of ghee right before going to bed. If your toes feel cold, massage each toe to improve circulation and warm it up. After you’re done, put on a pair of thick socks to keep your sheets clean and your feet warm, and off to dreamland you go!

Final Thoughts
While ghee is a great solution to our sleep problems, its effects can be improved when incorporated into a healthy sleep routine based on:
- Limiting your exposure to blue light emitted from phones, computers, and screens in general
- Giving yourself sufficient time to unwind before going to bed instead of doing so immediately after a long day
- Taking a warm bath, meditating, practicing yoga, etc.
- Trying to get 8 hours of sleep
- Having fixed sleeping hours

Follow these tips to make sure that your Vata dosha is balanced and your sleepless nights are a thing of the past!
